Just before the French border, in the Natural Park of the Alberes Mountains, stands the amazingly well-preserved Castle of Requesens. Built by the Counts of Roselló in the 11th Century, the Castle has had several owners, held many different names and undergone various renovations over the last few hundred years. While closed to the public a majority of the time, Spanish Trails Tours and EVents has been granted special visitation rights.
An hour and a half north of Barcelona, we’ll be driving up into the dense woods of the eastern Pyrenees. After rounding one final turn suddenly the Castle looms above us on top of the hill. We park the vans a few miles from the castle and spend the next couple of hours hiking to the castle (1 hour), exploring the endless passageways and rooms of the huge fortress, and climbing to the top of towers to behold the incredible views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The hiking is leisurely (optional, in fact) and our day is rounded off with a great lunch of traditional Catalan fare at a local restaurant providing the perfect ending to your journey.
