When you picture Barcelona, you probably think of swaying palm trees, warm Mediterranean beaches, and the lively night scene. It is true that Barcelona has all those things, but the great thing about this city is that it also has close proximity to the beautiful Pyrenees mountain range! While Barcelona is not generally considered a winter sports destination, there are actually more than 20 ski resorts within reach of the vibrant city. The Pyrenees mountains can be blanketed in white from as early as November until as late as April in the spring. Here is a quick overview of five of the best ski areas near Barcelona.

This resort is the largest, and some say best, resort in all of Spain! The drive there from Barcelona by car is about 4 hours, so you may want to consider spending a whole weekend there. That way you would also have more time to explore all 99 runs available! These include mostly fun blue and red intermediate slopes, and of course other options for those more or less experienced.

La Molina
Available via a 2-hour drive or bus ride from the city center, La Molina is one of the most popular winter day-trips from Barcelona! It’s no wonder this resort is so well known as it has been open for almost 100 years, and has 63 runs suited for all skill levels. They also boast the biggest super-pipe in the Pyrenees for the more advanced shredders!

La Masella
This resort is a close neighbor to La Molina and therefore also reachable from Barcelona in about 2 hours for a nice day trip. With 65 slopes, this resort offers plenty to explore during the day for all skill levels. For those who like to change it up, La Masella also has 13 flood-lit runs for night skiing every weekend from 6:30pm-9:00pm!

Port del Comte
Also located within a 2-hour drive from the city, the smaller Port del Comte is perfect for those who prefer a more laid-back, family-friendly skiing environment. With many lessons available on site, this resort with its 37 slopes is perfect if you’re a beginner or simply want a more chill location to practice. Although it is an excellent day-trip destination, keep in mind that there is no public transport to Port del Comte so a car is necessary!

Grand Valira
Feel like skiing in Andorra? While Baqueira-Beret is the largest in Spain, Grand Valira resort is the largest in all of the Pyrenees! Located 3.5 hours by car or coach, the distance and sheer size of this resort make a long weekend trip more worth it. It offers 6 ski areas connected by an efficient lift system and more than 110 slopes of all levels, 22 being black-diamond for the experienced! Grand Valira also offers snowboard parks, snowmobiling, dog sledding, and cross-country skiing. As far as a snow sport destination, this resort really has it all!
