It is almost here again! Festa Major de Gracia – The most important festival in the Gracia district and at the same time the most colorful and biggest neighborhood festival in Barcelona. The Gracia festival happens every year, from the 15th until the 21st of August. This one-week festival is also called the Fiestas de Gracia and it’s open to all. So if you are lucky enough to be in Barcelona during those days, do not miss the party!

Festa Mejor de Gracia

Festa Major de Gracia is a long-awaited event and the residents really put a lot of effort into it. Gracia’s residents spend months planning all decorations, concerts, and activities. The residents decorate around 17 streets – each street has their own theme and there is competition to pick the best one! It’s a beautiful way to fill many streets and plazas in the Gracia area.

The Gracia neighborhood of Barcelona, where the party happens, is located 20 minutes on foot from the city center in the direction of the hills. So just walk up the Passeig de Gracia street from Plaza Catalunya square. The nearest metro station is Fontana, which is the green line (L3). Gracia is known for its lively café and bar culture, bustling squares, and bohemian atmosphere. For many Catalans and foreigners, Gracia is the place where you can enjoy the charms of Barcelona without the tourists and overcrowding.

The origins of the festival date back to the 19th century and this year it is the 200th edition! It attracts over one and a half million visitors each year in August. During the day there are a lot of Catalan traditions, for instance, parades, giants, fire runs, and castle building. At night, live music, dancing, and fireworks entertain people. On weekdays, the party goes on until 2am, and on weekends until 3:30 am. It is a free fiesta, so you don’t need any tickets, just show up and enjoy! Although visitors are welcome, remember that it is mostly a fiesta for locals, so please respect the neighborhood. There is definitely something for everyone, so children, families, young and elder people will enjoy it!

The best time to go there is after 8:00 pm when it starts to get dark and decorations look nicer. But keep in mind that the first two days are super crowded, so you may need patience. If you prefer to go when there are fewer people around, go in the daytime.

Don’t miss the perfect event to have fun outdoors with live music, lovely atmosphere and beautiful decorations!
